The bedroom can be a difficult room to design. You have so much furniture to fit in there (bed, dresser, armoire, night stands, etc.) and there are a lot of door openings to work around ( closets, master bath door, bedroom door, etc.), so finding the right equation can feel a little like playing Tetris. For this reason many bedrooms fall far short in function and style. But they don’t have to. You can get all of those pieces in place, and add a little personality as well. Just follow these tips and soon you will be longing for bedtime.
- Maximize the View: Bay windows and floor-to-ceiling windows demand attention. If your bedroom offers a breathtaking views then those can be your room’s best asset. Rather than arranging the furnishings to compete with the windows plan the layout around them. Try placing the bed parallel to the window, not directly across from it. This arrangement allows you to enjoy the view, but also turn away from it if the light is too bright.
- Keep It Simple: Create restful bedrooms by limiting furnishings, accessories and patterns. You can maximize a room’s visual space by minimizing details. Don’t fill the room with unnecessary items or let it become overly decorated with fussy window treatments or an array of busy patterns.
- Mirrored Reflection: Make a tight bedroom feel open and spacious with properly placed mirrors. You can disguise closet doors with large mirrors to visually double the space in the bedroom. Well placed floor mirrors can have the same effect.
- Think Outside the Box: Traditionallyrugs are placed under the bed in bedrooms with hardwood floors. While this can create a cozy feeling it can sometime present challenges. If you have unusually angled walls it can make space planning especially difficult. Rather than have a custom rug created to fit the space, which would further emphasize the room’s angle, choose to showcase your fabulous harwood floors.
Sometimes it’s good not to have a rug under the bed; it creates spaciousness.
- Divide and Conquer: A long and narrow bedroom can be a challenge. One solution is to create two distinct spaces; a cozy bed area and a separate entertainment area just for relaxing. You can create multiple functional zones in a large room for a hotel suite-like feel.
- Don’t Forget The Finishing Touches: Place some fresh cut flowers on you night stand to make the room feel like a boutique hotel. Layer blankets to give your bedding a luxurious feel.

My mistake was letting my husband put a bowflex in out bedroom. It takes up half the space and looks uglier than sin, which throws off my soft yellow, green and brown color scheme. Gross....
