The mantel is focal point of the living area in most homes. It makes a statement that sets the tone for the rest of your home; not only for how guests view it, but for how you feel about your space as well. What your mantel says is up too you. It could scream: I am messy and unorganized, if you pile random stuff all over it rather than putting it away. It could shout: I am bland and uninteresting, if you leave it completely blank. Or it could declare: I am unique and fabulous in every way, if you create an intriguing display that leaves people wanting to see more. Here are a few unique ideas to get you started on your quest to becoming a mantle maven.
Mirror, Mirror

A good mirror can do double duty. Obviously, it brings it own beauty and flair. But it can also open up the room and highlight other aspects of the room. You can hang the mirror just above the mantel or slightly higher, depending on what you want to be seen in the reflection. Just be sure not to hang it too high. It should be at an adult’s eye level or it loses a lot of it’s inherent value. You can also let the mirror lean right on your mantel ledge for a shabby chic feel. Just make sure to accessorize accordingly. If you have a very polished decor, an unhung mirror can leave your room looking unfinished. Another option is to hang a variety of mirrors in a pattern.
Picture Perfect

Mantels and artwork have gone hand in hand for quite some time. The space above your fireplace is perfect for spotlighting a particularly special picture, but it also prime wall real estate for creating a dramatic pattern with several pictures. Choose pictures that have unique attributes with a common tie throughout the set. Be sure to place some complementary items on the mantel itself as well. You don’t have to clutter it, a few well chosen pieces on each end or in the center will do.
Lighten Up

Candles set atop a fireplace can create a warm and inviting scene. For the romantic at heart, candles can make any space better. And your mantel is no exception. A collection of votives and tapers will do away with harsh overhead lighting and bring and intimate allure to you living area.
