Every home has one. The catchall drawer where you throw everything from Sharpies to hole patches. If it doesn’t have a place, it goes in the junk drawer. I think that junk drawers are great. You need a small place for the miscellaneous stuff in your life. You can’t plan out a place for everything without becoming a OCD in the process. But just because it houses everything from A to Z does not mean that your junk drawer needs to be mess. So if you cringe when your guests accidentally reach for that handle, don’t despair. Contrary to popular belief, you can control this chaos. Check out the tips below to help you along your organizational journey.
Divide and Conquer
Junk drawers are tricky because they are full of little things that move and roll all over the place when the drawer is opened or closed. For this reason compartmentalization is essential. First you must evaluate what type of stuff you have in there. Then group similar items together. This is a great time to weed out things that may already have another home elsewhere and have mistakenly made their way into the junk drawer. This will give you an idea of how many compartments you need.
Choose your Weapon
There are several ways to divide a drawer. Your choice will most likely be based on the items you store in your drawer. A flatware divider is an easy fix, but you will only get about six compartments and they are all pretty tall and narrow. If you have lots of writing instruments, this may be the way to go. There are also drawer organizers that are specifically made for junk drawers. They have a variety of compartment sizes and are usually expandable so that they can fit in many different sized drawers. Last but not least, you can create your own custom compartments. Cardboard or hard plastic material can be cut to fit your needs. You can either glue pieces together or you can cut tongue and groove slits so that you can “click” them in place. Rubber bands, paper clips and shallow trays can also, help you tame you clutter. Just don’t go overboard with a plethora of different containers. This can create a chaos of its own.
Relocate
If you find that you have too much junk for one drawer, you can either purge or create a junk haven. Try repurposing a small dresser or bureau to house all of the junk drawers throughout your home.
