If you’re like millions of other Americans you’re keeping the summer heat at bay with an air conditioner (many of us couldn’t live without one!) but is yours running as cleanly and efficiently as it could be? The single best thing you can do to keep your A/C bill low and your indoor air cool and clean is simple DIY maintenance: change the air filter.
Why to change the air filter
A clean air filter will improve efficiency, save money on utility bills and maintenance, and prolong the life of the unit.
When to change the air filter
Most experts recommend changing an air conditioner’s air filterĀ every 1 – 6 months, depending on how much use it gets, what kind of unit it is, local air conditions (i.e. if you live near dusty farmland), etc. Check your air conditioner’s manual for specific recommendations.
How to change the air filter
If you have a central air system the air filter is usually located along the path of returning air and could be found in the wall, the ceiling, the furnace, or in the air conditioner itself. In window units it’s usually right behind the grill that faces into the room. Changing the filter is usually a very simple slide-out-the-old/slide-in-the-new process but follow the instructions that came with your particular unit for specifics.
