A Kitchen with a View

I love windows in kitchens because when you are standing there washing dishes or making dinner, it’s so nice to be able to have your beautiful garden to look at or maybe your children playing in the yard.  Plus, you can get so much light pouring into your kitchen that planting an herb garden and placing it on your window sill will now be an option!  If you have windows in your kitchen but need a little help livening it up, I’ve got some ideas for you.  Or if you don’t have a lot of windows but are planning on installing more, here are some tips on placement and style from KitchenBathIdeas.com.

  • Place a deep windowsill all along your windows.  This way you have room for a long line of potted herbs that crave sunlight.
  • If you have a space where a backsplash would traditionally go (or maybe you already have a backsplash there), you can replace it with windows!  A great suggestion is to put in two windows that open to let a breeze flow through.
  • Have a large kitchen?  Line your windows along the entire length of two connecting walls to let a ton of light in.  And don’t let that stove get in the way!  As long as your stove doesn’t climb up the wall, you can still place windows behind it.
  • Tall ceilings make for extra opportunities.  So if you have them don’t be afraid to install windows all the way up to the ceiling.  You can do this by either installing one window or keep the windows you have and just add transom windows above.  KitchenBathIdeas.com suggests that you fill the gap between windows with a long shelf.  Store your glass collectables up there and let the sun shine through!
  • Move furniture around in the kitchen to ensure that your table and chairs sit next to a bank of windows.  People will be more inclined to sit there and stare into your garden.
  • Add Skylights!  My step-dad did this all over our house to let in more natural light.  I love the idea because it eliminates the need to flip the light switch until the sun goes down.  Plus, as I said, the kitchen is a place you want a lot of light.
  • Put in a backsplash window that is backlit.  KitchenBathIdeas.com shows a window with a tall grassy pattern.  It’s very modern and adds interest to a plain and boring window.
