Xeriscaping ABCs

Xeriscaping literally means dry scaping or dry view, but it actually refers to water conscious gardening featuring plants that need less water.  However, a well planned landscape or retro-fitted yard can blend beautifully with the natural surrounding ecosystem.

As much as 50% of household water use is for the yard and garden, according to the University of Colorado Garden Extension.  With water rationing becoming  more common and more people inhabiting  arrid regions; xeriscaping is practical, good for the environment and cost efficient.

  • Start by asking  yourself what are the areas in your yard going to be used for?  Do you want a deck, a patio or a play area?
  • A major idea of xeriscaping is to keep turf to a minimum.  If you can replace turf with stepping stones or edege your lawn with flowers, shrubs, and trees, you will save water once the plants are established.
  • Choose plants for your region.
  • Well composted organic material is the ideal soil amendment.  It helps lighten soil, allowing it to drain well, and it slowly releases nutrients.
  • Hydrozone plants.  Group plants that have similar water requirements.
  • Instead of rock or gravel for mulch, organic materials, such as wood chips or bark allow water to penetrate and allow air exchange preventing soil temperature to rise high enough to damage plant roots or cause plant death.
  • Consider a low pressure micro irrigation system.  Or, maybe your current system needs updating to water evevnly and avoid wasting water.
  • Place plastic or metal containers in various spots around the landscape.   Turn sprinklers on for 10 minutes. Then measure the amount of water in the containers to see if your system needs tweaking. Make sure you are not watering the pavement or sidewalks.
  • Local utility companies and garden centers offer xeriscaping courses to the public.

Be creative!
