(blues rhythm) Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh: I got really blank walls. Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh: and I don’t know what to do. Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh: I can’t stare at this space. But I -just- don’t- have -a -clue. I GOT THE BLANK WALL BLUES!
Ok, that was fun! I’m totally singing here. But you didn’t click on this article to hear my terrible lyrics. You came here to get solutions to your bare walls. And they can be a major decorating frustration. You don’t want to just put up some old picture you’ve had for years, or a painting that doesn’t go with the room. Perhaps you already have pictures on other walls in the room and just want something a little different to tie it all together. Well, a couple of solutions to the Blank Wall Blues are right here for you!
- Hang wallpaper, but not in the traditional sense. Just take a strip of the wallpaper and hang it as though it was artwork. Pick up some small rods and attach them to the top and bottom to keep the paper from rolling up. Then use ribbon or string to hang it in place.
- If you are relatively artistic, you can draw your own design on a solid piece of fabric. Draw flowers or other simple ideas for something more personal on your walls.
- Staying in the fabric realm, consider taking some of the fabric from your window treatments and frame it too! But so that it doesn’t just look like you framed a piece of fabric, throw some other kind of art inside. Maybe something you created yourself. And if you’ve always wanted a fabric bulletin board, create your own matching board using the same technique. Pick up some cork fro the board and wrap it in the fabric, frame it, and you’re done.
- Another fun idea for those of you who have a vintage look to their home is to hang vintage posters you find at a flea market. You can use regular frames or poster hangers. The poster can slide into the frame and hang by a ribbon.
- I love the idea of decals on your walls. You can find them in different sayings, floral prints or even have them custom made. This is perfect for a long blank hallway or above your bed (where you may not want something heavy).
- Remember in the 1970′s when people put up wood on their walls? Try this idea that is similar in feel, but not in ugliness. Cover your plain walls with large sheets of light colored plywood. Then add a shelf as well as a collage of frames in various sizes to complete the look.
- Using inexpensive record frames creates a lovely display of delicate vintage handkerchiefs.
- Staircases can sometimes be the blank gorilla in the room. You want to put pictures there, but nothing seems to strike you. Well try creating a collage of images that complement each other. Maybe family photos are what you desire! Print them in Black and White or Sepia tones for a more uniform look. Choose a couple different frame styles or colors that match your decor. It will make the collage a little less boring. Be sure to create a layout organizing the placement of each frame prior to hanging.
