Closets are an interesting place.  They hold so many of our everyday items and we go to them constantly.  So why do we allow them to become cluttered and disorganized?  Probably because we can just shut the doors and it’s all out of sight.  But there is no reason why the closet can’t be organized, extremely functional and look fantastic.  All you need is some paint and a few shelves, hooks and bins.

Start by taking everything out of your closet.  Once that is done, think about panting it.  There are not really any specific guidelines when choosing a paint color or sheen for a closet.  But I would recommend not using anything too dark, unless there is a light inside.  Consider taking the color on your walls and choosing a color either a shade darker or lighter.  That way the closet really feels like a part of the room.

The next step would be to take down that single rod and get a shorter one; half the size would work nicely.  You don’t need to hang everything you own and hangers can actually ruin many tops.  So folding is a great option.  If that’s what you decide to do, add a few charming shelves and a feminine dresser that match and line them up on the second half of the closet.  Place sweaters, pants, purses and containers on the shelves and dresser top.

If there is enough room in between the hanging clothes and shelves, create a pretty hook system for purses.  Make it pretty by covering a long narrow board with a fabric that matches your room colors and hang it in the closet wall.  Then put a wooden boarder around it as a frame.  Attach hooks to the board and you will have a wonderful place for bags.

Finish it up with storage.  Look for baskets and bins with tops to store belts, scarves, hats and extra jewelry.  Speaking of hats, hat boxes make great storage as well; they are usually so attractive.  Laundry bins can be so messy but if you find a rolling bin lined with fabric, you can slide it under your hanging clothes to make dirty look elegant.  Label every container and your daily routine will be quick and easy.
