Indoor/Outdoor Home Improvement

People often fall into two categories when it comes to indoor/outdoor home improvement. There are those who are optimistic realists, and there are those who are filled with delusions of grandeur. Which are you? Yes, it is helpful to be a member of the first category. It leads to more projects that get finished after being started.

No doubt, there are all kinds of things you want to do in terms of home improvement–a long wish list leading to housing perfection. The one thing you always have to consider is your budget. Let’s briefly touch on a few indoor/outdoor home improvement issues, and the best course of action to make your house and life at home more enjoyable.

Indoor/Outdoor Home Improvement: Renovations vs. Touch Ups

Before you start tearing walls out of the kitchen to extend your space, purchase all new appliances and redo the counter-tops with granite or polished concrete, you’ll want to consider the “why” of what you’re doing. Are you just tired of the way things are, do you legitimately need a new kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, deck, patio or koi pond? You certainly may. Regardless, before you begin offering that cosmetic face lift, here’s a little advice that I once received from a doctor: Health begins from the inside out.

In other words, to truly improve your home, inside and out, the process must begin with the boring, practical stuff: The plumbing, the electrical work, the roofing, the insulation, the structural integrity. If any of these are issues, get them taken care of first. It would be terrible to replace a floor, only to find that it needed to be torn up for a pipe exchange in the master bathroom. And yet, it happens, all the time.

Once you have all your t’s crossed and i’s dotted, you can move on to the fun stuff. Sure, you can decorate, remodel and renovate toward current trends, or you can make a few small changes based on personal style and functionality. You can build that barbecue pit area you’ve always wanted, landscape the yard, add some great exterior illumination to a patio, turn an existing patio into a sun room—oh, the options. In terms of indoor improvements, you can add new lighting, replace appliances, kitchen counters, cabinets, floors throughout the living space, take down walls, add new rooms, maximize space: The list is nearly endless.

Jut one bit of advice for performing these indoor/outdoor home improvement projects. If you’re a “do it yourself” type, be sure to start and finish your projects, and then move on to the next. If you’re looking to contract the jobs, the best way to find the right person is through a referral. There really are people who finish work on time, and on budget if you’re willing to shop around.
